NUPENG Begins Warning Strike

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) today commenced 3-day warning strike over multinational oil companies’ failure to address workers’ welfare.

NUPENG President, Mr. Igwe Achese announced the strike yesterday in Abuja while addressing a press conference.

He said the Federal Government has scheduled a meeting with the union today, saying the outcome of the meeting would determine the continuation of the warning strike.

Achese said the union took the decision after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and after the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum for government intervention on issues raised against multinationals operating in the oil and gas sector.

He said the strike action is to drive home issues of casual staff, job security, non implementations of collective agreements across the country in the oil and gas sector and the balkanization of the ongoing divestment system that has led to job losses in the oil sector.
